Students in the RFL College of Business senior class of Fall 2015 used their business school training to develop a strategic plan for the Williamsburg Community Action Agency. This regional social enterprise adminsters the Head Start program for parents of lower and working class preschoolers, as well as weatherization, after school sports, and self-improvement programs for the working lower income in Williamsburg and James City County. Reba Bolden, the organization's executive director, indicated she is pleased with the students' progress, and looks forward to future work with VSU.

VSU Professor Presents Two Research Projects at NYU International Social Entrepreneurship Conference

Two working research papers developed by Dr. Patrice Perry-Rivers, Director of the Center for Entrepreneurship and Assistant Professor of Management, were selected for presentation at a convergence of global scholars focused on social entrepreneurship research at New York University. Her papers,The Impact of Social Entrepreneurial Team Formation on Social Enterprise Performance and The Contextual Congruence of Social Entrepreneurship and Social Problems In Society, were presented at the 12th Annual Social Entrepreneurship Research Conference on Nov. 4-6, 2015.

Spring 2015 VSU Business Seniors Help Develop Strategic Plan for Entrepreneurship Center

Seniors in the College of Business capstone strategy class got practical experience helping their own school this semester--their senior project was to develop a preliminary strategic plan for the business school's own entrepreneurship center. Over 70 seniors performed research on other entrepreneurship centers and regional entrepreneurship rates; interviewed faculty involved with the center; and used the strategy theories to which they were exposed in class to write a well-developed, initial plan for the Center, including recommendations for the Center's initial website.

In an effort to expose VSU students to entrepreneurship as a viable career option and support local entrepreneurs, the Reginald F. Lewis College of Business has launched the VSU Center for Entrepreneurship. The Center will focus on providing education, entrepreneurship resources, and academic research that spurs successful businesses launched in the Eastern Virginia region and beyond. Speaker Series to Inspire Student & Community Entrepreneurship

The VSU Center for Entrepreneurship has launched an ongoing lecture series enabling aspiring entrepreneurs to glean from the expertise and experience of successful regional entrepreneurs.Small business owners, social entrepreneurs, veteran business owners, and minority and women busienss owners from many walks of life and industries have agreed to share their knowledge with those attending series lectures. The Center's First Student Business Plan Competition is Scheduled for this Fall!

We are excited to announce that we will host the Center's first student business planning competition in the Fall of 2015. On Nov. 30, Dec. 2, and Dec. 7, business school students enrolled in the Entrepreneurship and Small Business Planning course will have the chance to deliver a 5 minute mini-business plan pitch to a panel of local businesspeople. The winner will receive a $500 investment toward the launch of their small business or to further business and entrepreneurship education. Visit the site often for upcoming details.
